SHIATSU

A Japanese bodywork technique utilizing traditional acupuncture points, but employing manipulation and pressure from the thumbs, fingers and palms rather than needles or mechanical instruments. Shiatsu reinforces joints and muscles, and focuses on the efficient flow of energy throughout the meridians and autonomic nervous system. Often referred to as a "one-point" pressure system, shiatsu has an advantage over acupuncture in that it can be self-administered - the subject simply has to know which of the 365 tsubos requires pressure in order to treat the specific complaint.
It is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy. It can help in a wide range of conditions – from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health. Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular Shiatsu sessions help to prevent the build up of stress in out daily lives.

Common conditions that have been helped by Shiatsu:-

  • Back pain
  • Headaches, migraines
  • Whiplash injuries and neck stiffness
  • Joint pain/reduced mobility
  • Menstrual problems
  • Digestive problems

SORE THROAT

Anything that irritates and inflames the throat lining can cause soreness, and is usually the result of a cold or flu. Inflammation of the throat is pharyngitis; of the voice box laryngitis; of the tonsils tonsillitis.

Most sore throats are the result of viral infections. A small percentage come from bacterial infections, usually the streptococcus bacteria.

The treatment programme:

Treat as soon as you have that tender, crackling sensation that makes it uncomfortable to swallow.

Recommended herbs:

● Sage (Salvia officinalis): The essential oil contains the compound salvene, giving the oil antibacterial and antiseptic actions. Dosage: ten drops of tincture in water three or four times a day.

● Calendula (Calendula officinalis): Strong antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It also helps to soothe pain and reduce fever and inflammation. Use the standard dosage.

● Propolis (Resina propoli): Made by bees from tree sap, it is an antiseptic, antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. Available as a tincture (take it at the standard dosage) and a throat spray.

As a gargle, add 5ml (1tsp) propolis tincture to 100ml (3fl oz) cooled, boiled water. Gargle and swallow up to three times a day.

● Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha): Antiseptic and anti-inflammatory herb, myrrh makes a soothing gargle. Place five drops of tincture in 50ml (1fl oz) cooled, boiled water and stir. Dosage: Gargle and swallow up to six times a day until the symptoms subside.

Essential supplements:

Boost your intake of antivirals, antibacterials and antioxidants. Increase your dosages of Vitamin C (500mg, four times daily) and zinc (15mg, twice daily).

Foods to eat:

Thyme and cinnamon help provide antiseptic properties, while ginger is an anti-inflammatory.

BACTERIAL AND VIRAL INFECTIONS

Bacteria and viruses surround us. A healthy immune system is generally able to fight off these pathogens, but many factors (including stress, overwork and toxicity), coupled with a poor diet high in sugars and additives and low in nutrients, compromise immunity, making us susceptible to illness.

The treatment programme:

Herbs, supplements and homeopathic remedies provide an arsenal of immune-boosters, as well as antibacterials and antivirals, to assist the body’s recovery from infection.

Recommended herbs :

When the first symptoms appear, take 15 drops of each tincture in a little water or juice at least three times a day for the duration of your illness.

● Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus): Inhibits viruses and can destroy bacteria. It increases the body’s production of immune-boosting white blood cells.

● Cat’s claw (Uncaria tomentosa): Contains compounds called pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids, which stimulate the body’s production of immune cells.

● Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea): Boosts production of the protein interferon (which helps to kill viruses) and of infection-fighting white blood cells. It contains alkylamides, thought to prevent bacteria penetrating the skin.

● Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis): Alkaloids in Goldenseal increase the production of white blood cells and its astringency clears mucus.

● Thyme (Thymus vulgaris): Antiseptic and antimicrobial, it helps clear the body of infection and promotes restful sleep to speed recovery.

● Elderberry (Sambucus nigra): Contain antiviron, which reduces viral symptoms, and antioxidant flavonoids to speed recovery.

● Plantain (Plantago major): Contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is good for combatting gut and respiratory infections.

● St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum): This excellent antiviral is ideal for combatting colds, flu, and herpes infections.

● Olive leaf (Olea europaea): The main active constituent is oleuropein, a powerful antiviral that acts by either destroying the virus’s cell walls or inhibiting the production of enzymes and amino acids the virus needs to grow.

● Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis): Phenolic acid in lemon balm prevents a virus attaching itself to cells and so stops it spreading through the body.

Antioxidants:

These are crucial for preventing free radicals from damaging our cells, with many, such as vitamin C and zinc, possessing immune-boosting properties. Dosage: Two capsules, twice a day.

Probiotics:

These ‘good’ bacteria provide a biological barrier to the invasion and establishment of pathological bacteria. Dosage: Eight billion daily during an infection.

Nutritional advice:

Increase your intake of immune-boosters such as garlic, shiitake mushrooms, oranges and other fresh fruit, and fresh vegetables – especially sweet potatoes. Thyme, cinnamon and garlic will provide antiseptic properties, while ginger keeps inflammation to a minimum.

Foods to avoid:

Keep dairy products (except for plain bio yogurt and cottage cheese) to a minimum, as these tend to be mucus-forming so may make your symptoms worse.
