GLUCOSAMINE
Glucosamine is the The most commonly taken joint supplement. It provides the building blocks for cartilage and helps damaged cartilage within arthritic joints by stimulating the body's manufacture of collagen, the protein portion of the fibrous substance that holds joints together. GREEN TEA
There are already many health benefits accredited to drinking green tea but now another one looks likely to be added to that list - reducing pain in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.

Salah-uddin Ahmed from University of Michigan Health System has been conducting research under laboratory conditions to determine if green tea can reduce the inflammation in joints which is the main cause of pain in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition created when the lining of the cartilage found within joints gets degraded and inflamed which results in on-going damage and great pain to the patient.

Ahmed and his team obtained cells called synovial fibroblasts, which make up the lining around the joint and then, cultured them and put them in contact with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which is the active compound found in green tea. The next step was to introduce cytokine interleukin, a protein which produces enzymes and further proteins that

Invade joints and initiate breakdown of the cartilage.

Dr Ahmed had previously discovered that the fibroblasts that were treated before hand with EGCG were more able to protect themselves from the attack of cytokine interleukin. In his latest research he found that the pre treated fibroblasts could also block two other potent molecules with damaging activity leading to bone break down Although further research is being conducted and there is no final conclusion on the extent drinking green tea can specifically help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, the researchers recommended that patients should drink green tea anyway as it also had several other well known health benefits.

GUIDED IMAGERY
Guided imagery is based on the principle that the imagination has the capacity to relieve pain and promote healing when it is optimistic and confident and, inversely, can help trigger a breakdown when it is consumed by worry. The techniques of guided imagery are designed to teach individuals how to use their own powers of imagination to steer away from negative thoughts toward models of well-being.
